What is Managed Services – Managed Services is the proactive management of IT technology on behalf of a customer on a monthly subscription basis. What this means is that for a fixed monthly fee we will proactively manage and support your IT infrastructure. So, it’s not a product; it’s a delivery method of IT support. Managed Services is the future of IT support.
Traditional Break/Fix Support – Break/Fix is the old, traditional method of providing IT support. When something breaks, you call your support company and they come out and fix it. They then send you a bill for the time and materials that were used – much like a plumber. This method reacts to problems that have already happened and by that stage it’s all too late anyway, downtime has occurred and revenue has been lost. Most often they only fix the symptoms of the issue and not the underlying problem either.
Ok, now that you understand the two main support delivery methods it’s time to understand how this affects your business.
Important Differences and a Win/win approach
The first and most important point to note is that under Managed Services, the goals of both companies are aligned. If you are paying a fixed fee for support, the support company will make every effort to make sure things don’t break down because the more time they spend on your problems the less profitable they are. The old break/fix guy just loved it when you had a total IT disaster; they rubbed their hands with glee when the server crashed knowing they’d make a packet of money. Under managed services the last thing the service provider wants is for the server to crash. In fact, they monitor the server 24/7 for alerts notifying of impending doom and proactively fix the problem before it gets out of control. It’s certainly a win/win for both parties. Their goals are aligned and their relationship is a positive one; a true partnership for the first time!
The other main point to note is that under Managed Services, the service provider invests in products to assist them in monitoring and maintaining your network. The client benefits hugely from these investments in technology by having a stable and available network. The break/fix guy certainly doesn’t. He wants your computers to fail so they can make money. Win/win again!
And the third main point is predictability. Don’t you hate it when your IT problems throw your budget off? One fixed monthly fee is all it will ever be regardless of the number of issues or the time taken to fix them. Whether its ninety hours or nine hours, your costs are constant and so is our revenue stream. You guessed it – win/win all over again.
